On a road trip through the United States, my partner, Chris, and I stopped at Death Valley, California to view the vast salt flats of the Badwater Basin. I had secretly been planning to propose marriage at our next stop, the Grand Canyon. However, it occurred to me that Death Valley could be an unusual and memorable place to propose. Chris accepted, and we chose the name "Badwater" following our marriage in 2019. For information about the Badwater Basin, tap or click the button in the image above.
I started my freelance career in 2006, operating as John Hassett and Associates Ltd., delivering consultancy and project management services to the National Health Service (NHS) in the rural county of Dorset, England. After returning to Australia, I obtained an ABN and registered for GST. I established my business as a sole trader entity in my name, which changed to Badwater in 2019. In addition to providing freelance services, I have worked in both salaried and contract positions.
I qualified as an accountant in the UK and have since undertaken studies in the fields of psychology and sociology at Monash University. I hold a Certificate in Social Sciences from the UK Open University. Additional learnings include Prince2 project management and CRISP-DM data mining. While working in Alice Springs I completed training for Closing The Gap, Cultural Awareness and Cultural Safety provided by the RACGP at the Centre for Remote Health. I am an alumni of the Social Impact Hub Fellowship program.
I engage across all industries including the private sector, not-for-profit, independent government-funded enterprises and state/territory government departments. These include health and community services organisations. As a sole trader, I am able to provide a personalised and flexible service, that focuses on adapting to the culture of the client organisation. Change management services are designed to align with the client organisation’s strategic plan, values and code of conduct.
My experience in Australia is extensive, with former employers and clients located in capital cities through to very remote locations. I have held positions that range from those within managed teams, as well as autonomous roles within executive leadership teams and working with board members. I have been a key leader and participant in implementing service improvements in the areas of cancer, public dental, hospital in the home, private hospice care and aged care. I gained experience working directly with the public through my volunteer work as a telephone crisis counsellor.
As a person living with a non-visible disability, I am passionate about improving accessibility within the workplace. I am focusing on engaging with employers to create strategies that deliver person-centred supports that enhance the workforce and enable the employer to fulfil their obligations under applicable laws. I have completed certification as an independent NDIS support worker and deliver NDIS services directly with self or plan managed NDIS participants, or as a subcontractor of a registered NDIS organisation.
I deliver presentations of my personal experience of living with a non-visible disability, the impact on my life and how I have been both challenged and supported in the workplace.
My rates are negotiable and determined by the type and level of service provided. A full resume is available along with testimonials and professional references.
