Aged Care Strengthened Standards are now Current!

Title page for Oral Health in Residential Aged Care project in May 2014
Oral Health in Residential Aged Care Homes

In 2014 I worked at Dental Health Services Victoria (now known as Oral Health Victoria). I created a tookit for public dental agencies to share with staff at residential aged care facilities. I have developed an updated toolkit that aligns with the strengthened standards.

Detailed background

ACQSC Strengthened Standards

The ACQSC resource for the standard can be accessed at:

https://www.agedcarequality.gov.au/strengthened-quality-standards/clinical-care/clinical-safety#what-is-the-outcome-that-needs-to-be-achieved

Legislation:

  • Standard 5: Clinical Care
  • Outcome 5.5: Clinical safety
  • Action 5.5.7: Oral Health

The provider implements processes to maintain oral health and prevent decline by:

  1. facilitating access to a dentist or other oral health practitioner for oral health assessments at the commencement of care, regularly and when required;
  2. monitoring and responding to deterioration in oral health;
  3. assisting with daily oral hygiene needs.

Refer to the Guidance section at the above web address for information on the importance of this outcome and an explanation of key tasks.

RACH Readiness Assessment Tool

As a sign of my personal attachment to this initiative, I have continued to use the photo of my late mother that was taken when visiting her at a care home in England in 2010.

The RACH Readiness Tool is available now. The document is completed by the RACH Clinical Manager or RN and enables the Home Manager to assess the current processes, to ensure the RACH delivers the resident care and meets the requirements of Strengthened Quality Standard 5.5.7.

The tool Is available in Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF formats.
